A recollection of events from the Alykat Creative clothing photoshoot.
I am not a mother. Oh Lordy, far from it. But being female, 33 and childless from a small town, I am a rare breed and have many girlfriends who are rocking motherhood and my hat goes off to my amazing mumma friends who recently ‘lent’ me their children for a photoshoot of my new Alykat clothing.
I mean, I’m not that naive, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy to photograph three 3 year olds and a couple of one year olds in clothing that wasn’t their own, in the wilderness of the NSW mid-north-coast. But surely it’s doable, right?
Straight off the mark, there was no way we’d be getting any photos of the blessed little one year olds, if they weren’t attached to their mother’s hips at all times and snotting up a storm, they were crying for dear life.
Ok. Cool, cool. That’s fine, I can work with that, I was mainly interested in getting the toddler shots anyway, they’d be up for some photos, right? Kids love photos? No. Not right. As soon as they’d cottoned on that we wanted them to do something they maybe didn’t want to do, life became a little harder, and somehow I feel maybe even a little shorter.
I won’t lie, there was chocolate bribery. Which worked for all of about 30 seconds. However, luckily for me, the amazingly patient photographer Mia Golding, had agreed to bring her own gorgeous curly red haired three year old along, who was a veteran model for mum and was a complete pro, and life saver.
A few wines and communal outfit changes in the wilderness later, had me pinching myself whenever I remembered what we were actually doing: a photoshoot, of my designs, on clothing, with a real photographer, pretending to be models, with children – so I was happy to be getting any shots at all. And I have since learnt, peeling a one year old off mum’s hip in order to strike a pose, is a bold move.
In the end, between juggling a wine, a pram and an axe, witnessing multiple nudie runs and tantrums, and finding my phone in the sandpit, we actually had a ridiculously fun day. One that confirmed my non-existent maternal instinct was very much in-tact. But fun.
Thanks so much to my amazing yummy mummy girlfriends, who are absolute champions and I don’t know how they do it. Thank you for totally exploiting your little children to help showcase the closest thing to my own offspring, my little Alykat business.
